Concept to Creation: Coolfire

Hey nerds, today we wanted to give you a closer look at the process of putting together a concert sound system for a client. Recently we worked with our good friends over at Coolfire in St. Louis to put together an outdoor concert in a parking lot outside their downtown offices. Coolfire wanted this to be a big party for their employees and guests, so they secured hometown hero Pokey LaFarge to entertain the crowd, and our good buddy DJ Crucial was handling the VIP room upstairs.

We met with the Coolfire folks to discuss the budget and general setup, and to look over the artist's rider. Coolfire really goes all out when it comes to events for their employees, so we had plenty of room to work with on the budget. As we looked over the parking lot and layout, Joel, as usual, was sketching non-stop on a JBL pad, coming up with a plan. Once we had a basic idea of the look we were going for, all we had to do was duplicate it in the real world.

The majority of the event took place after dark, so lighting was key. With a professional band and a good system in place, audio was a piece of cake. Here's a rundown of the gear we used to execute the event:

  • (8) JBL VRX932 LA-1 Line Array Cabinets
  • (4) 2x18" Subwoofer Cabinets
  • 18,000W FOH amp rack loaded with Crown XTi
  • Yamaha LS9-32 Digital Console
  • (6) JBL MRX512 12" Stage Monitors
  • (6) ETC Source Four Lekos
  • (20) Chauvet ColorDash Batten Quad 6 LED Colorwash Fixtures
